Canada Summer Youth Jobs

Available Positions
1. Cook’s Helper – Kitchen Assistant ($18.00/hr)
Responsibilities
- Assist with all aspects of food service operations.
- Assist with the food and kitchen supply inventory list.
- Ensure proper food preparation, handling, storing and serving practices, in accordance with Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit guidelines.
- Assist with the creation of healthy, inclusive meals for community meal programs (100+ people) and emergency shelter meals (50+ people).
- Assist with the kitchen recycling, garbage, and compost needs.
- Help maintain overall cleanliness; dishes, counters, fridges, exhausts, ovens, etc.
- Assist with the general maintenance of utility rooms, kitchen, food service and donation areas.
- Provide meal programs in a non-judgmental manner that meets the needs of the community and shelter Participants.
- Be aware of food allergies and other dietary restrictions and assist with ensuring safe alternatives.
Requirement: Knowledge of Food Safety practices.
2. Community and social services worker – Shelter Assistant ($20.00/hr)
Responsibilities
- Help to build positive relationships that are healthy and supportive while presenting oneself in a professional manner.
- De-escalate participants and help them work through the issues that are causing problems including conflict resolution between participants.
- Focus on participants’ needs with a non-judgmental attitude.
- Ensure expectations, policies and procedures are followed.
- Promptly address any behaviors that could lead to harm to themselves or others, or any behavior that goes directly against the agreed upon program expectations, using a person-centered, trauma informed approach.
- Record and report any and all issues related to behavior including what was done to support the participant and any follow up that is required.
- Answer phones and emails and provide diversion.
- Using best practices of a person centered approach, make decisions around the services provided to participants including those accessing shelter and being selected from the triage list.
- Supervise meal service and provide support.
- Exhibit appropriate professional boundaries with staff, volunteers, and participants.
Requirement: Currently enrolled in or graduated from a Post-Secondary Social Service Worker (SSW) program.
3. Community service worker – Wellness Assistant ($20.00/hr)
- Assist with the wellness committee and program planning.
- Assist with community scan and evaluation.
- Assist with partnership development and maintenance.
- Assist with front desk support for community partner sign up.
- Assist with group facilitation and group development.
Requirement: Currently enrolled in or graduated from a Post-Secondary Social Service Worker (SSW) program.
Mandatory Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for these positions, applicants must meet the Canada Summer Jobs criteria:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
