Electronics Engineer(ing) – Innovation
Date Posted: August 18th, 2022 Date Closing: September 30th, 2022Job Purpose: Plans and manages the electronics development (hardware and firmware) for multiple new innovation projects from initial ideas through to R&D product development hand over.
Key Responsibilities:
• Responsible for developing electronic related innovative products/processes from the initial concept through the Innovation Process and Innovation Stage Gates, including: design, validation, prototyping, testing/QA, and evaluation of the proposed production process and business case.
• Responsible for proving the targeted technology and creating risk assessments to ensure the team is aware of the implications of developing the innovative product.
• Collaborate with IoT partners to develop smart connected products.
• Collaborate with the electronics suppliers to develop prototype and production unit. Actively communicate with the suppliers to track progress and support all technical aspects.
• Use Project Management best practices to plan all electronic-related innovation development activities with the Innovation Team, cross functional/divisional team(s) that are necessary to create the concept (including the creation of a detailed project master schedule and scopes), in close collaboration with the engineering manager. Provide regular project updates, status reports and technical reports as required.
• Where necessary, work with the assigned design resource to define the concept that will meet the technical requirements. Periodically review the concepts to ensure progress to technical goals and deadlines. Ensure that design, cross divisional and peer reviews are completed. Document all issues and define actions plans. Where necessary, work with universities and other 3rd party groups throughout the innovation development process.
• Develop firmware and hardware for electronic products (including validation and QA testing) and assist team member(s) to successful product development.
• Develop project budget, including any capital expenditure for testing, etc. and submit to manager for approval.
• Apply appropriate consideration to design cost and initiate the necessary activities throughout the innovation development process to establish production costs and take corrective actions as necessary to achieve targeted cost.
• Ensure design for manufacture, design for service and design for installation are optimized during development, including obtaining cross functional input (internal and external) and personally validating the suitability of the product.
• Prepare reports, track hours and compile costs for the purpose of claiming SR&ED tax credits.
• Involve and communicate with all departments, at the appropriate time, during the innovation development process to ensure the project is successful (i.e. manufacturing, purchasing, IT, marketing).
Education & Experience:
• Must have a University Degree in mechatronics, electrical engineering, or similar degree. A Master’s Degree would be considered an asset.
• Minimum three (3) years of experience with embedded programming, electronics design.
• Must possess knowledge and practical experience of electronics, including PCB layout, manufacturing, programming, connectivity, battery technology, software, firmware.
• Proven experience with programming languages: C (Must), C++. Knowledge of other programming languages would be an asset.
• PMP designation would be considered an asset.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel). Superior candidates will be proficient in Microsoft Project.
Specialized Skills:
• Experience with STM32 and ESP32 microcontrollers and knowledge of peripherals such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, etc.
• Familiar with freeRTOS such as tasks, semaphores, etc.
• Knowledge of electronic circuits and able to read schematic and PCB design.
• Technical understanding or experience with one or more radio technologies including; Cellular, Wifi, Bluetooth.
• Must have experience with IoT development projects.
• Must be proficient with hand and power tools.
• Must be familiar with the use of instrumentation/debug tools for the purpose of product evaluation, measurement and experimentation such as ST link, FTDI, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
• Knowledge and prior experience with the Canadian SR&ED program.
• Ability to deal with dynamic and rapidly changing environment requiring efficient and timely decision making.
• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, including capability to drive executive meetings.
