Landscape and Grounds Maintenance Manager

Role Summary

Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Facilities, this position is responsible for the maintenance and development of property grounds to ensure a pleasant appearance.  The Landscape Manager’s overall responsibility is to coordinate the landscape team and contractors providing guidance and direction as required.  The Landscape Manager shall coordinate the procurement and schedule use of resources such as labour, equipment, and materials to ensure maximum use and completion of work within budget, safety guidelines and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day landscaping activities and requirements including the effective and efficient administration and leadership
  • Oversee the execution of landscape services satisfying contract requirements for the Resort Association, the Developer owned amenities and the Condominium Corporations
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining condition of playground and sports areas including basketball court and tennis court
  • Monitor operation of irrigation systems
  • Oversee snow removal operations
  • Provide guidance and direction, including setting and monitoring performance standards
  • Responsible for hiring, training, coaching and development of a successful and enthusiastic team, engaging in performance management and positive coaching and counseling as needed
  • Manage scheduling in accordance with employment policies and budget targets
  • Ensure that all time management and payroll processes are carried out in an accurate and timely manner
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of landscape orientation and training
  • Develop relationships with key suppliers, in alignment with business plan
  • Coach and develop Colleagues through career development and advancement opportunities
  • Organize and manage all seasonal plantings and decorations for Resort Association and Developer owned assets and amenities
  • Monitor, maintain and organize all necessary work within the Nature Preserve, wayfinding signage across the resort and irrigation and other secondary utility distribution systems to outdoor landscape areas
  • Ensure daily checks are completed throughout the Nature Preserve trails and that the trails are maintained, free and clear of debris, granular, mulch along edge and bridges in good condition
  • Develop and implement a planting and landscape service available to Homeowners and Condominium Corporations
  • Participate in business planning process for landscape initiatives
  • Serve as an individual contributor by performing technical or functional job duties
  • Operate and maintain a variety of maintenance equipment including cord trimmer, mower, snowblower, side by side, backpack blower, ventrac, chain saw
  • Liaison between Friday Harbour and contractors, keeping the Property leadership team apprised of activities including any challenges
  • Manage relationships with contractors and service providers
  • Interact with guests and coordinate staff to provide optimum services
  • Organize, facilitate, and follow up with contractors on planned activities
  • Responsible for obtaining quotations, oversee work being performed and review invoices for services
  • Assist in maintaining environmental safeguards
  • Ensure that property landscape goals are communicated, understood and met by department and contractors
  • Develop and manage landscape budget through measurable performance indicators
  • Track expenses and assist in the control of the landscape budget
  • Assist with the daily project management functions and set up
  • Conduct regular inspections of building exteriors and surrounding landscape
  • Address guest concerns, requests, or issues either individually or by enlisting the help of others
  • Compliance with all safety regulations of assigned tasks, and ensure a clean and safe working environment with active participation in the health and safety program
  • Adhere to all environmental policies and programs as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary education in Botany or Horticulture
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the landscaping industry
  • Minimum 3 years landscape leadership experience, leading a successful team
  • Roadway snow removal operation using heavy equipment an asset
  • Gravel surface grading and restoration an asset
  • General landscape material shunting an asset
  • Previous resort experience an asset
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license is required (a satisfactory driver’s abstract is required as a condition of employment)
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and works with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be extremely responsible with integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Required to move, lift, carry, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire shift
  • Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, and pulling
  • Move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces
  • Significant exposure to varying weather conditions
  • Move through narrow, confined, or elevated spaces
  • Move up and down a ladder
  • Will encounter obnoxious smells
  • Will encounter hazardous materials, dangerous or toxic substances and chemicals
  • May encounter excessive noise from engines and equipment
