Transit Driver

Our Barrie Transit team is seeking full-time Conventional Transit Operators. Conventional Transit Operators are responsible for the safe and on-time transportation of passengers in accordance with Company and client contract standards. Operators will drive a variety of vehicles depending on the facility and need.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities: The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the Conventional Transit Operator position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Conventional Transit Operator must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:
- Operates a vehicle on an assigned route transporting customers to and from designated locations, as well as related activities in a safe a timely manner
- Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure proper operating condition of vehicle and on-board equipment
- Prepares daily vehicle inspection reports detailing pre trip and post trip inspection results
- Communicates vehicle defects both minor and major immediately to the Control Centre and/or maintenance personnel
- Ensures safe and clean vehicle condition at the start and end of each route operated, including checking for and reporting lost items
- Maintains, reads and understands route sheets including time changes and notifies Supervisor immediately of any changes
- Operates the vehicle and stops to allow passengers to safely board and disembark in compliance with Company policies
- Communicates effectively with dispatch or central office personnel via two way radio, MDT or other company provided technology in accordance with Company policies
- Adjusts to variables in normal working conditions, including adverse weather, traffic and construction, customer issues, vehicle accidents and trip changes
- Employs all defensive driving techniques and safety policies with a goal to eliminate preventable and non- preventable accidents and customer injuries
- Provides excellent customer service including assistance in loading and unloading customers if/when necessary, supplying information, and responding appropriately in the event of emergency
- Maintains a safe work area and a focus on safety to reduce the opportunity for injury to self or other employees
- Immediately reports all accidents/incidents in accordance with Company policies and procedures
- Accurately maintains proper shift documentation reports, and records
- Demonstrates a cooperative attitude with fellow employees, customers and Supervisors while promoting Company values
- Protects customers and secures vehicle in the event of accident or injury; communicates effectively with dispatch and operations staff as directed by accident and incident policies
- Diffuses difficult situations and maintains order onboard vehicle
- Documents thoroughly the course of the day including odometer readings, times, MDT, and or manifest depending on circumstance
- Accurately collects and reconciles fares collected from customers
- Follows correct end-of-shift procedures
- Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance including strict adherence to company supplied uniforms, being properly dressed, neatly groomed and with good hygiene according to Company standards
- Demonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality in compliance with Company policies
- Attends all required in-service training, Company required safety meetings and training and other required meetings
- All other duties as assigned
Working Conditions: The Conventional Transit Operator works primarily in a city transit vehicle on the road providing transportation and requires the following physical activities: long periods of sitting, considerable use of arms, repetitive hand-wrist motion, and legs and moving the whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and managing customers and materials. Operators frequently work in outside weather conditions and are occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- A valid B or C Ontario Driver\’s License with Z (Airbrakes) endorsement
- Minimum of 3 Years of driving experience and an acceptable driving record
- Two (2) years\’ relevant experience preferred or any equivalent combination of education and job experience (as determined by the Company)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and defensive driving
- Ability to safety operate a variety of Company vehicles and equipment including lifts and all other safety devices
- Ability to read, write and speak the English language clearly
- Knowledge of the transit service area
- Ability to work a variety of different shifts, flexible hours and off days
- Ability to navigate the service area through the use of maps, paddles and/or on-board directional equipment
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers
- Ability to remain calm and manage emergency situations and ensure the safety of all customers and employees
- Knowledge of client and service operating requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively and work with all departments
- Ability to work independently and objectively
- Must have the ability to remain polite, professional and courteous while communicating with customers and other staff
- Must have an ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship with other staff
- Must be able to remain calm during stressful situations
- Ability to plan ahead, act and react appropriately
